Round 1 began today in Glasgow, with the field being weaker than previous years but the 2007 Champion, Ville Lang, seeded 2 and the 2008 runner-up and top seeded Anand Pawar are both safely into the second round, both winning in two games. Both Russian seeds, Vladimir Malkov and Vladimir Ivanov also progressed into the second round with two game victories.The only seeds to suffer early exits were the 15th seeded Raj Popat who lost to Austrian David Obernosterer and the 9th seeded Sattawat Pongnairat lost to local Scottish player Gordon Hoggan.
The top seeded Ellis and Mills also progressed into the second round of the men’s doubles, followed later in the day by the 2nd seeded Scottish pair of Gilmour and Campbell and over the day, the remainder of the 8 seeds progressed safely into the second round without the loss of a game between them.
There was some opening round matches in the women’s singles and doubles, with the 2008 winner, Jillie Cooper and the 2009 runner-up Emma Mason teaming up this year and progressing to the second round. Commonwealth Games quarter finalist Kirsty Gilmour is also through to the second round to ensure local interest is vast on day 2, with Susan Egelstaff starting the defence of her title.
