Gade Moves To Last 8

Day two started with the completion of Round 1’s matches, with the likes of Lu Lan, Tien Minh Nguyen and Peter Gade playing their opening matches of the competition and potentially their first of two matches today. The three seeded players had little trouble in booking their places into Round 2.

Round 2 began at 2pm local time, with all of the games expecting to be played and the tournament to be back on schedule. There was trouble for Widianto and Natsir in their second round match against Ahmad and Polii after losing the opening game, only to bounce back and take the next two games and book their place in the last 8. There was also wins for Gunawan and Marissa in the mixed doubles as the 3^rd seed beat the local pairing of Saputra and Yao in three games. Current world champions Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl defeated the English pairing of Olver and Clark in two games to book their place in the last 8 also.

Joachim Persson’s excellent win yesterday would be his last win this week as 7^th seeded Sony Kuncoro defeated the Danish player in two games to book his place in the last 8. Dicky Palyama continues his recent run of good form as he progressed into the quarter final stage with a simple two game win. Tien Minh Nguyen’s second match of the day was against Kashrap Parupalli of India and the Vietnamese player never got into the game and lost in two games, 23-21, 21-8. There was another scare for Lee Chong Wei as he was taken to three games for the second time this week, only to come through and set up a quarter final match against Sony Kuncoro. Peter Gade’s second match of the day was against Carl Baxter of England, the 9 hour break for Gade was enough for the Dane to recharge his batteries and comfortably defeat Baxter 21-8, 21-13 to book his place in the last 8.

Top seed in the Women’s Singles Saina Nehwal had a harder time than yesterday against Ell Diehl, however the top seed Indian came through in two close games to reach the last 8. There were wins for Yao Jie, Korean teenager Bae Youn Joo and Chinese unknown Li Xuerui to book their places in the quarter final. Lu Lan also came through her second match of the day in a tight three set encounter against Judith Meulendijks, winning the 3^rd game 23-21 to book her place in the last 8. The top two seeds in the Women’s Doubles both crashed out at the second round, the top seeded Maeda and Suetsuna losing out to Gutta and Ponnappa of India. The 2^nd seeded Fujii and Kakiiwa lost out to Indonesian’s Jauhari and Polii.

Palyama Upsets Jorgensen

A rain-shortened day in Singapore has delayed some players opening round games until Thursday such as Peter Gade but even down one court for most of the day the organisers almost completed a full days play, with several seeds crashing out throughout the day.

The unknown Chinese players in Singapore are making a name for themselves as Li Xuerui defeated 8^th seeded Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong 21-4, 21-14 in just 22 minutes to explode onto the Super Series stage within the opening hour of play. 3^rd seed Zhou Mi crashed out in the opening round as her terrible run of form in the 2010 Super Series continues. Saina Nehwal had no trouble in her opening round match, defeating Wong Mew Choo 21-8, 21-5 to book a 2^nd round match against the European Circuit Finals champion, Ella Diehl. 4^th seeded Lu Lan, who is not taking part in the World Championships in Paris after dropping out of China’s top 4 (currently China’s #6) but is still ranked inside the top 10 in the world has to wait until tomorrow to start her campaign against Ai Goto of Japan.

The biggest casualty in the men’s draw is Jan O Jorgensen, seeded 5 for the event as Dicky Palyama defeated him in three tight games. Peter Gade and Tien Minh Nguyen start their campaigns off tomorrow after the rain delay forced their matches into tomorrow’s order of play. Lee Chong Wei made hard work of his opening match against Brice Leverdez after losing the second game before recovering to take the match in three games. Joachim Persson scored an excellent victory over Marc Zwiebler of Germany in three games to set up a 2^nd round match against Sony Kuncoro.

The top two seeds are into Round 2 of the Mixed Doubles, top seeded Widianto and Natsir had to come back from a game down to set up a all-Indonesian 2^nd round match with Ahmad and Polii. World Champions Laybourn and Rytter Juhl had no problems in progressing to round 2, where they will face the English pair of Heather Olver and Anthony Clark. There was mixed fortunes for the English contingent in Singapore as 8^th seeded Robertson and Wallwork were defeated in three games by local pair Triyachart and Yao in Round 1.

Nigeria No Show on Day 1

Day One was meant to see the host nation in action as well as seven other matches, but Nigeria’s failure to turn up on time in Kuala Lumpur forced them into a forfeit of their opening game over the host nation Malaysia.

Thomas Cup:

Pre-Tournament favourites China defeated Peru in the opening match of Group A with a convincing 5-0 win, with Lin Dan impressing with a 21-4, 21-6 victory over Antonio De Vinatea in 20 minutes. Chen Jin and Chen Long also won their singles easily to give China a 3-0 lead in the match. Two simple wins for the doubles pairings completed the 5-0 win.

Denmark also completed an impressive 5-0 victory over Poland in the first of the all-European ties in Group C, with Peter Gade winning the opening match over Przemyslaw Wacha 21-9, 21-9 to lay down a marker for the match that the other Danes responded to. Boe and Mogensen defeated Cwalina and Logosz in the second match, followed by wins for Jorgensen, Paaske and Rasmussen and finally Joachim Persson to defeat the Poles by 5-0, all in two games.

Indonesia took on Australia in Group D, with Taufik Hidiyat leading the charge against Jeff Tho. 26 minutes was all Hidayat needed to give Indonesia a 1-0 lead, winning 21-12, 21-12. There was little resistance from the Australians in the other four matches, except for Smith and Warfe’s brave second game performance that they had 3 game points against Kido and Setiawan, only to lost out to the Indonesians 24-22.

Uber Cup:

China opened up their Uber Cup campaign with a 5-0 demolition of the USA in their opening group game. Wang Yihan started the rout with a stunning 21-2, 21-9 victory over Rena Wang in 21 minutes, before Ma and Wang won the opening doubles match 21-7, 21-12. China conceded just 37 points in the final three matches of the rubber, with Wang Xin, Wang Shixian and the pairing of Pan and Tian completing an impressive first victory for the Uber Cup favourites.

Indonesia’s men secured a 5-0 victory over Australia; the women matched the task with a 5-0 win over Australia’s women. All five matches won in two games, with little resistance from the Australians, only Australia’s doubles partnerships were able to secure double digit scores in both of their two games.

Japan against Germany had the makings of a tight match, the opening match seen Eriko Hirose take on Juliane Schenk. The Germans took an early 1-0 lead in the match with Schenk’s 21-15, 21-12 victory, the lead however was short lived as Fujii and Kakiiwa levelled the rubber at 1-1 with a two game victory. Ai Goto defeated Karin Schnaase to give the Japanese a 2-1 advantage. The first doubles match was the only 3-game match of the day as Suetsuna and Maeda took on Schenk and Overzier. The Japanese duo coming through in 3 games, 21-17, 18-21, 21-11 to give Japan an unassailable 3-1 lead. Yu Hirayama completed the comeback with a 21-16, 21-3 victory over Fabienne Deprez to give Japan a 4-1 victory.

Korea played South Africa in one of the evening games, with a 5-0 win expected by the majority. Sung Ji Hyun started with a 21-9, 21-9 victory and the Korean’s never looked back, taking the next 4 matches without the loss of a game. Only Stacey Doubell was able to take double digits in any of the ten games that the South Africans played, losing the second game in her match against Bae Youn Joo 21-10.

Gade Moves On To Semi-Finals

The English interest in the tournament is down to just three, whilst the Danish and German teams have plenty of interest in most of the events going into the weekend.

Mens Singles:

Top seed Peter Gade was in fine form after his 3 game scare against Raul Must yesterday, his opponent was the 8^th seeded Carl Baxter of England for a place in the last 4. 35 minutes is all it took for Gade to win the match by the score of 21-14, 21-11. The top seed Dane will play Marc Zweibler of Germany in the semi final after the German 3^rd seed beat 5^th seeded Dicky Palyama in their quarterfinal match. After dropping the opening game, Zweibler battled back to take the match 19-21, 21-10, 21-16.

The other semi final is between the 2^nd seeded Jan O Jorgensen, who defeated fellow Dane Joachim Persson in his quarterfinal 21-13, 21-17 to reach the last 4. He plays the 4^th seeded Englishman Rajiv Ouseph after he defeated the final unseeded player in the draw, Ireland’s Scott Evans in three games 15-21, 23-21, 21-12, with Scott Evans having a match point at 21-20 in the second game.

Women’s Singles

Pi Hongyan continues to live up to her top seed with a three game victory over the 5^th seeded Petya Nedelcheva, winning 21-15, 14-21, 21-12 to book her place in the semi final against Juliane Schenk of Germany, who beat the 7^th seeded Judith Meulendijks in three games also, winning 21-16, 16-21, 21-15 to set up the first semi final.

The second semi final sees the 6^th seeded Ella Diehl take on the 2^nd seeded Tine Rasmussen. The Russian defeated 4^th seeded Jie Yao in two games, 21-18, 21-17 to set up a match against the Danish 2^nd seeded. She defeated Scotland’s Susan Egelstaff in two games also, 21-8, 21-16.

Doubles:

The Danish domination in the men’s doubles continues, with all 3 seeded pairs safely progressing to the last 4 without the loss of a game at the quarterfinal stage. They are joined the semi finals by the German pair of Michael Fuchs and Ingo Kindervater, who defeated Peter Mills and Marcus Ellis of England in three games to progress to the last 4.

3 of the 4 seeds are still in the women’s doubles draw, with only the 3^rd seeded French pair of Choinet and Rasadi falling to English pair Agathangelou and Olver in three games.  The unseeded English ladies play top seeds Nedelcheva and Russkikh for a place in Sunday’s final. The other semi final is between Danes Damkjear Kruse and Schjott-Kristensen, seeded 4 and Vislova and Sorokina of Russia, seeded 2.

The top three seeds in the mixed doubles have been joined in the semi finals by Belgian duo Claes and Descamps, they defeated Kindervater and Overzier in three games to set up a match against top seeded Laybourn and Rytter Juhl of Denmark. The other semi final is between Poland’s Mateusiak and Kostiuczyk and England’s Robertson and Wallwork, with both pairs coming through their quarterfinal matches in two games.

Friday’s Results

Clark Withdraws

The doubles competitions began play this morning in Manchester, as well the 3^rd round of the singles, with no more seeds falling in either event. The big news of the day for the local fans was Anthony Clark’s withdrawal from both doubles events.

Mens Singles:

Peter Gade is through to the last 8, but was forced to work for his win against Raul Must of Estonia. England were hopeful of a 3^rd player in the last 8 as Andrew Smith took on Marc Zweibler of Germany in the last 16, but after sharing the opening 10 points, Zweibler took the next 8 before Andrew Smith retired through injury trailing 13-5 in the first game.

The last unseeded player in the draw is Ireland’s Scott Evans, who plays Rajiv Ouseph in the last 8 tomorrow. The 4^th quarterfinal is an all-Danish affair, with Joachim Persson (Seeded 6) playing Jan O Jorgensen (Seeded 2) for a place in Saturday’s semi final.

Women’s Singles

All 8 seeds have safely progressed into the last 8, with only 6^th seed Ella Diehl dropping a game so far. Pi Hongyan continues to dominate her half of the draw, today defeating Camilla Sorensen of Denmark, 21-18, 21-5 to book her place against Petya Nedelcheva, who defeated England’s Elizabeth Cann 21-13, 21-13 to progress into tomorrow’s quarterfinal.

Juliane Schenk will play Judith Meulendijks tomorrow in the second quarterfinal, 3^rd seeded Schenk defeated Switzerland’s Jeanine Cicognini 21-19, 21-9 whilst 7^th seeded Meulendijks beat Iceland’s Ranga Ingolfsdottir 21-15, 21-10 to book her place in tomorrow’s quarter final.

The bottom half of the draw sees Ella Diehl, seeded 6^th play Yao Jie of the Netherlands for a place in the last 4. The Dutch 4^th seed beat Karin Schnaase of Germany 21-16, 21-7 to progress whist the 6^th seeded Russian had to come from a game down to beat England’s Helen Davies 17-21, 21-16, 21-11.

Susan Egelstaff, seeded 8 is through to play Tine Rasmussen of Denmark, the 2^nd seed in the last of the quarterfinals tomorrow. Both ladies have failed to drop a game getting to this stage of the competition, with Susan Egelstaff dropping 4 less points to this stage and been on court just 3 minutes less than her Danish opponent.

Doubles:

In the Men’s Doubles, all 3 of the seeded Danish pairs have safely made into the last 8. Only the pre-tournament withdrawal of the 3^rd seeded Robertson and Clark means that there isn’t a full compliment of seeds in the last 8. However there is English interest still, with Peter Mills and Marcus Ellis through to the last 8 to play German pair Michael Fuchs and Ingo Kindervater.

All 4 seeds in the Women’s Doubles are through, with neither of the four pairs losing a game on route to the last 8. The top seeded Nedelcheva and Russkikh play Frier Kristiansen and Ropke of Denmark, who progressed to the last 8 with a 21-10, 21-1 win over their Greek opponents in Round 2. The 2^nd seeded Russian duo of Vislova and Sorokina play the Scottish pair of Emma Mason and Imogen Bankier who failed to drop a game in both their matches today.

Only 4 seeds remain from the 8 that begun the mixed doubles, top seeds and current world champions Laybourn and Rytter Juhl safely progressed through both matches today to reach the last 8 and are the only seed remaining in the top half of the draw after losing Middleton and Agathangelou (Seeded 6), Durkin and Vislova (Seeded 4) and Adcock and White (Seeded 7) in the opening round this morning. Jenny Wallwork and Nathan Robertson are the last English pair left in the competition, the 3^rd seeds play Sorokina and Nikolaenko of Russia for a place in the last 4.

Mixed Fortunes For Japanese Shuttler

Hiroyuki Saeki and Kana Ito had the opportunity for an unlikely Japanese double in the singles today at the Polish International, however only one of the two succeeded in their quest.

Mens Singles:

Hiroyuki Saeki’s 11^th match of the week seemed to be a bridge too far against Pablo Abian of Spain, with the Spaniard in excellent form after defeating Peter Mikkelsen and Joachim Persson to reach the final. After a close opening to the first game, Abian pulled out a lead and stretched out his advantage and won the opening game 21-12, with 13 smash winners.

The momentum was still with the Spaniard and took a commanding lead in the second game after stringing a streak of 7 points to take an 11-2 lead at the interval, Saeki remained competitive in the second half of the game, but Abian took the second game 21-10 and the title.

Women’s Singles

Kana Ito played her 7^th match in 4 days, winning the previous 6. Her opponent in the final was 4^th seeded Chan Tsz Ka of Hong Kong, who was also in the women’s doubles final too. However, Ito was unfazed by the stage she was on and dominated the opening game, winning it 21-14. The Japanese women continued her excellent form in the second game, before a spirited comeback from Chan levelled the score at 18-18, only for Ito to serve out for the match and take the match 21-14, 21-18.

Doubles:

Chan Tsz Ka’s second final was the same result as her singles, losing 21-18, 16-21, 10-21 to the top seeds Sari and Yao of Singapore. It was a bad day for another Hong Kong pairing, the top seeds in the men’s doubles, Wiratama and Wong lost to 2^nd seeds Ivanov and Sozonov 17-21, 21-14, 14-21. Russia took a second title in the mixed doubles as Ashmarin and Prokopenko defeated the Singapore pairing of Triyachart and Yao 21-12, 21-17 in Sunday’s last match.

Persson Safely Through to Quarter-Finals

The fields have been shortened to just 8, but countless seeds have fallen before the weekend’s play has even begun. 5 seeds have fallen in the men’s singles and the women’s singles, as well as the top seeds in the mixed.

Mens Singles:

One seed that is safely through to the last 8 is top seeded Joachim Persson, who defeated Magnus Sahlberg in Round 1 and Alex Pang of Canada in Round 2, both in two games to book his place against Petr Koukal, the 7^th seed from the Czech Republic. Koukal is through to the last 8 without the loss of a game either.

The next quarterfinal is an all-Spanish matchup, as Pablo Abian overcame 4^th seed Peter Mikkelsen, who pulled out in the 3^rd game with injury. Indra Bagus Ade Chandra of Spain is also through; defeating 6^th seeded Wong Wing Ki 21-19, 23-21 to book his place in tomorrow’s quarterfinal.

Singapore’s Robin Gonansa is through to the last 8, after Stephan Wojcikiewicz pulled out before the match after the Canadian beat 5^th seed Dmytro Zavadsky in the opening round. Gonansa will play Hiroyuki Saeki of Japan, who defeated the 3^rd seeded Christian Lind Thomsen 22-20, 21-17 to book his place in the last 8. Another Japanese player, Shuhei Hayasaki defeated Vladimir Malkov, the 8^th seed from Russian to set up a quarterfinal match against Poland’s 2^nd seed Przemyslaw Wacha.

Women’s Singles

Beiwin Zhang, the top seed from Singapore is through to the last 8 with two convincing victories to this stage, she will play Wang Lin Lang of Indonesia in the last 8 after the Indonesian defeated 7^th seed Tatjana Bibik of Russia 23-21, 21-8 to progress.

Unseeded Japanese player, Kana Ito defeated 3^rd seeded Rachel Van Cutsen to book her place in tomorrow’s quarterfinal against Austria’s Simone Prutsch, she defeated Rachel Howard who beat the 8^th seed Elena Prus in the opening round. Olga Golovanova is through to the last 8 after a 21-17, 21-17 victory over Maja Tvrdy, the 6^th seed from Slovenia. She will play the 4^th seed Chan Tsz Ka of Hong Kong for a place in the semi final.

Anastasia Prokopenko is the 5^th unseeded player in the last 8, after beating Larisa Griga 21-11, 21-14 in the second round. She will play the 2^nd seed Judith Meulendijks in the quarters, with the Dutch seed coming through both her matches easily in 2 games.

Mixed Doubles:

In an event that promised so much for the Polish crowd, they have seen their chances in this event shortened to just one pair. Top seeded Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Kostiuczyk crashed out in the opening match to Hong Kong suo Wong and Chau in three games. Polish qualifiers Ociepa and Rudolf crashed out in the second round to Pang and Li of Canada.

The 4^th seeds, Szkudiarczyk and Wotjtkowsa are Poland’s last hope in the competition; they will play Singapore pairing of Triyachart and Yao for a place in the last 4. Another Polish couple Moren and Pocztowiak crashed out in round 2 to Neo and Chrisnanta of Singapore.

The only other seed left in the draw is the 2^nd seeds, Atrashchenkov and Prus of Ukraine, who came through a tight 3 game match with Wilson-Smith and Warfe of New Zealand 13-21, 21-13, 21-19.

Polish International Championships 2010

Polish International Draws

This week’s event in Poland is one of the last events before the European Championships in Manchester next month and has attracted some of the big names in European badminton to play themselves into form ahead of next month’s European Championships.

Mens Singles:

The top seed is Joachim Persson who is coming off a poor 2-week run in the Super Series, losing out to Kenichi Tago in Round 2 in the All England and another second round defeat to Chen Jin in Switzerland last week. His campaign this week begins against the Swede Magnus Sahlberg before a potential 2^nd round encounter with Ville Lang of Finland.

Christian Lind Thomsen (Seeded 3) and Peter Mikkelsen (Seeded 4) lead a strong Danish squad looking for success in the men’s singles draw. Przemyslaw Wacha is the local hope in the competition, seeded 2 but there is also threats from the Ukranian Dmtyro Zavadsky, seeded 5 and Petr Koukal of the Czech Republic, seeded 7. Vladimir Malkov of Russia is another threat, seeded 8.

Women’s Singles

Singapore’s top seed Zhang Beiwen starts her campaign against rising Belgian starlet Lianne Tan, hoping to past her semi final defeat to Gu Juan in last week’s event behind her. The other potential winners of the event coming from the Netherlands and Ukraine, with Judith Meulendijks and Rachel Van Cutsen leading the Dutch charge. Larisa Griga and Elena Prus are the big Ukrainan hopes.

Mixed Doubles:

Poland’s best chance of success lie with Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Kostiuczyk, however with their withdrawal at the semi final stage last week in Switzerland, questions will be asked if they are 100% fit to attempt to win on their home soil. Should they fail to deliver, two other Polish pairings are seeded. 3^rd seeded Cwalina and Kurdieska and 4^th seeded Szkudiarczyk and Motjkowska.

Gade to Face Lin Dan

Limited success last week does not guarantee success this week in Basel, Switzerland as several seeds and some unseeded threats have crashed out on day 2.

Mens Singles:

Last week’s beaten finalist will not make it a repeat performance this week as Du Pengyu defeated the Japanese player 21-12, 21-18 to book his place in the last 8. He will play Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the quarterfinal after he defeated Dicky Palyama in three games to progress through. Tien Minh Nguyen has put his early exit last week behind to book his place in the last 8 with a two-game victory over Carl Baxter of England.

Nguyen’s opponent in the last 8 is the 3^rd seed, Chen Jin. The Chinese player defeated Joachim Persson in two games to progress into tomorrow’s quarterfinals. Chen Long has also put his early defeat in last week’s All England to the back of his mind as he progressed to the quarterfinals to play against Kazushi Yamada, who defeated the 4^th seed Taufik Hidayat in two games to play in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

The last of the quarterfinals is the match of the day for tomorrow, as 2^nd seed Lin Dan takes over 5^th seed, Peter Gade. The Chinese 2^nd seed has been in excellent form in the opening two rounds with comfortable two game victories and the same can be said for Gade, who defeated Park Sung Hwan 21-15, 21-16 to progress into the last 8.

Women’s Singles

Wang Yihan suffered a surprise 21-17, 24-22 loss in the second round to Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong who will now go on to play Wang Shixian, the 6^th seed from China for a place in Saturday’s semi final.

2^nd seed Jiang Yanjiao has been the story of the opening two rounds, with her stunning 21-7, 21-3 win in round 1 over Susan Egelstaff of Scotland and her 21-16, 21-5 victory over Chen Hsiao Huan of Chinese Taipei making a real threat in the competition, she will play 8^th seeded Juliane Schenk of Germany in the last 8 after the German defeated Bae Seung Hee of Korea to progress.

3^rd seeded Pi Hongyan is also through after defeated her second Japanese opponent in two days, today Ai Goto was defeated 21-19, 21-18. Unseeded Bae Joun Joo is the French 3^rd seed opponent for tomorrow after winning the all-Korean clash against Kim Moon Hi 22-20, 21-17.

World Champion Lu Lan is through the last 8 with a 21-15, 21-13 win over Eriko Hirose of Japan. She will play unseeded Russian Ella Diehl in the quarterfinal after Diehl defeated Switzerland’s Jeannine Cicognini 21-19, 21-17 to book her place in the last 8.

Mens Doubles:

Paaske and Rasmussen continue their superb run of form over the past few weeks as they reached the quarterfinals with a two game victory over Fuchs and Kindervater. Top seeded Koo and Tan are also through to the last 8 after defeating Bonde and Mollyhus 21-15, 21-11. The top seeds will play unseeded Korean duo of Kim and Shin for a place in the last 4.

Women’s Doubles:

The final 8 partnerships in the women’s doubles are the 8 seeds, almost unheard of at this level. Top seeds Chin and Wong will play 5^th seeds Maeda and Suetsuna for a place in the last 4 against the winners of Ha and Lee of Korea, seeded 8 and Nedelcheva and Russkikh, the 4^th seeds.

Chen and Chien, the Chinese Taipei 3^rd seeds will play Chinese 6^th seeds Du and Pan for a place in the last 4 against the winners of the 7^thseeds Tian and Yu against Fujii and Kakiiwa of Japan, the 2^nd seeds and Korean Super Series runners-up.

Mixed Doubles:

It is another shock early defeat for Zheng Bo and Ma Jin in the mixed doubles, losing out to unseeded Chen and Chen of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 21-16. They will play another unseeded pair in the quarterfinal, Shin and Yoo of Korean who defeated another Korean couple, the 8^th seeded Ko and Ha to progress into the last 8.

World Champions and 3^rd seeds, Laybourn and Rytter Juhl are also through after a stunning 21-4, 21-8 victory of Dutch qualifiers Khodabux and Barning. They will play the unseeded Chinese pair of Zhang and Tian, Zhang winning the mixed doubles last week with Zhao Yunlei.

7^th seeds Mateusiak and Kostiuczyk of Poland are also through and will play the 2^nd of 3 Korean pairs left in the draw, Yoo and Kim. The final match tomorrow pits the 5^th seeded Chinese pair of Tao and Zhang against the 2^nd seeded Korean duo Lee and Lee, the 3^rd Korean partnership left in the draw.

Lin Dan Cruises Past Hashim

The second day was a stronger day for the seeds, however another top seed has fallen before the quarterfinal stage. Peter Gade continues on his quest for his second All England title as the top players in the world position themselves for a run at the title.

Mens Singles:

First on court again and safely into the quarterfinals was Lee Chong Wei with a fine victory over Sony Dwi Kunncoro 21-11, 21-17. He will play unseeded Korean Shon Wan Ho who defeated Chen Long in a three-game classic 21-18, 18-21, 21-19 after Chen Long disposed of 8^th seeded Jorgensen in round 1 yesterday. The other quarterfinal in the top half is perhaps the match of the day tomorrow between 4^th seed Taufik Hidayat and 5^th seed Peter Gade. Hidayat safely through against Englishman Andrew Smith 21-18, 21-14 and Gade survived a first game scare to win 24-22, 21-18 over Simon Santoso.

The bottom half sees unseeded Kenichi Tago through to see Chen Jin in the first quarterfinal. Tago has progressed through two tough matches, playing Tien Ming Nguyen in round 1 and defeating Joachim Persson, last years 6^th seed in three games, 22-24, 21-15, 21-8 to book his place against the 3^rd seed from China. Chen Jin safely progressed after a tight opening game against another English player Rajiv Ouseph, winning in two games, 23-21, 21-8.

Lin Dan is also through to tomorrow’s quarterfinal where he will play Bao Chunlai, the 6^th seed from China. Bao Chunlai’s phenomenal performance over Park Sung Hwan that seen him 13-0 in the opening game, before winning the match 21-5, 21-10. Lin Dan has failed to explode into life as yet but continues to progress in the tournament with another two-game victory over Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia.

Women’s Singles:

Wang Yihan was the first of the seeds through to the last 8 of the tournament with a 21-16, 21-16 win over Yu Hirayama of Japan. She will play the 8^th seeded Zhou Mi in the quarterfinals after the all-Hong Kong second round match between her and Wang Chen was won by the 8^th seed, 21-13, 21-15. The second quarterfinal match in the top half is an all-Chinese affair with 3^rd seeded Jiang Yanjiao coming through her second round match against Maria Febe Kusamastuti 21-9, 21-14 to set up a match against Wang Xin, the 5^th seed. She defeated Ai Goto of Japan 21-12, 21-13 to book her place in tomorrow’s quarterfinal.

Saina Nehwal booked her place in the last 8 with a win over Bae Sueng Hee of Korea, 21-11, 22-20 and will play unseeded Juliane Schenk of Germany, who also defeated a Korean to reach the quarterfinal stage, beating Bae Youn Joo 21-14, 21-16 to set up a match against the 7^th seeded Nehwal. The last of the 4 quarterfinal matches is the pick of the bunch, with Tine Rasmussen playing 6^th seed Lu Lan of China. Rasmussen progressed easily past Eriko Hirose 21-12, 21-12 to book her place whilst Lu Lan had to fight for a tight three-game victory over Scotland’s Susan Egelstaff, winning in the end 25-23, 20-22, 21-17 to reach the last 8 of the competition.

Mens Doubles:

Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen continue their fantastic run at this year’s competition with a 21-18, 21-19 victory over Ko and Yoo of Korea. They will play Tan and Gan of Malaysia in the last 8 after they defeated Chinese pairing of Chai and Zhang 21-8, 23-21. The two pairings are the only two non-seeded partnerships left in the men’s doubles draw. Kido and Setiawan also progressed, winning 21-16, 21-16 over qualifiers Endo and Hirobe of Japan and the 3^rd seeds will play Lee and Choong of Malaysia in the last 8 after the 8^th seeds fought back from a game down to win 17-21, 23-21, 21-11.

The third of the quarterfinals sees the 5^th seeded Cai and Fu play the 4^th seeded Boe and Mogensen for a place in the semi finals. Cai and Fu winning 21-11, 21-17 over their Korean opponents Kim and Shin whilst Boe and Mogensen came through a much tighter match, winning 22-20, 21-19 over Fan and Lee of Chinese Taipei. The second seeds Lee and Jung have been the class pairing in the competition to date, winning both matches to date in convincing fashion, today defeating Kumar and Thomas of India 21-12, 21-6 to book their place in the last 8 against Guo and Xu of China, the 7^th seeds. The Chinese pair defeating local favourites Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark 21-14, 21-11 to book their place in the last 8.

Women’s Doubles:

There is a distinctly Asian feel to the event, with all 8 pairings coming from China, Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei or Indonesia. Top seeded Du and Yu are through to the quarter final after a 21-8, 21-12 win over Sorokina and Vislova of Russia and will play the Japanese 6^th seeds Maeda and Suetsuna in the last 8. The Japanese pair defeating Wallwork and White over England 21-23, 21-9, 21-8 to set up an all-seeded match in the quarters.

Wang and Ma are also through to the last 8 with a stunning 21-4, 21-7 win over Amitapai and Munkit of Thailand, they will play Chen and Chien of Chinese Taipei who beat the Bulgaria/Russian partnership of Anastasia Russkikh and Petya Nedelcheva 24-22, 21-9 to book their place in the last 8 of the event.

Mixed Doubles:

The top seeds Zheng Bo and Ma Jin were expected to contest for the title on Sunday, but were defeated by the Chinese qualifiers Zhang and Zhao 21-16, 21-17 to book their place in the last 8. They will play the 8^th seeded Gunawan and Marissa after their 21-14, 21-16 victory over Fujii and Hashimoto. He and Yu’s match against Blair and Bankier did not go ahead with Robert Blair’s leg injury forcing him to retire from the event. The 4^th seeds He and Yu will play another Chinese pair, the 6^th seeded Tao and Zhang after a three-game match with Mateusiak and Kostiucyzk 20-22, 21-18, 21-12.

There is English interest in the quarterfinals, with Anthony Clark and Heather Olver through to the last 8 against a 21-18, 22-20 win over Lee and Chien of Chinese Taipei. They will play the 3^rd seeds, Lee and Lee of Korean after their victory in their all-Korean second round match against Yoo and Kim, winning 21-13, 21-17. The second English pair play in the last of the quarterfinals, with Jenny Wallwork and Nathan Robertson defeating the 7^th seeds, Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl 21-14, 16-21, 21-15. They will play the second seeds Widianto and Natsir after their 21-12, 21-8 win over Careme and Choinet of France
