The day begun with an awesome display by Ma and Wang in the opening round of the Women’s Doubles, winning 21-4, 21-3 in just 14 minutes. Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark defeated 5th seeded Malaysians Mohd and Abdul in two games, 21-17, 21-12, setting up a second round match with Wong and Wiratama of Hong Kong.
All four Chinese seeds in the Women’s singles progressed into Round 2, Wang Lin needing three games to beat Judith Meulendijks, only Saina Nehwal has been put out of the seeded players. The 8th seed losing out to Yao Jie of Holland in two games 21-16, 21-12.
The chance for Gade to claim revenge on Jorgensen is the big storyline of Thursday’s play, was Jorgensen’s win a one-off fluke or the changing of the guard in Danish Badminton? Both won their opening round matches in two games, Jorgensen beating Andrew Smith and Gade beating Derek Wong of Singapore.
Chen Jin’s retirement in the second game of his match with Hu Yun drops the seeds left in the Men’s Singles down to 5 after Boonsak Ponsana’s defeat to an unseeded Indonesian player and with Lin Dan’s withdrawal pre-tournament.
Lee Chong Wei defeated Ng Wei in two games; Taufik Hidayat beat Eric Pang in two games also, setting up a potential quarterfinal clash with Peter Gade or Jan Jorgensen.
Play resumes tomorrow at noon local time.
After a great performance at the recent China Open Super Series, Lin Dan is still looking strong as he heads into the semi-finals against Taufik Hidayat. It has been a long time since these two have played against each other in a big tournament, and at this stage of the event. Unfortunately for Lee Chong Wei fans the world number 1 did not play this tournament, and I’m not sure why, perhaps an injury, or an injured ego after losing to Lin Dan a couple weeks ago.
Surprisingly Peter Gade lost early on to the young Chinese player Gong Weijie who was then crushed by Chen Jin. Chen Jin will be playing Boonsak Ponsana in his semi-final. Another disappointment for the Danes was the early loss of Joachim Persson to India’s Arvind Bhat.
(I know I may have posted this video before, but I wanted to have something featuring Taufik and Lin Dan)
