Perhaps my emphasis on Ulsing success in this event after coming out of the qualifying is over played. Maybe I’m acting a little bit too surprised by this result, because the fact is it’s not that big of a surprise based on the caliber of his play. The Dane may have dropped far down the rankings, but his play is as strong as ever. Few on the tour would be surprised by the fact that he is now in the final in Bulgaria, but I can assure you that Magnus Sahlberg did not expect to lose 21-12, 21-8 in the semi-finals to Ulsing. Of course he benefited from the withdrawal of the event’s top seed, but nonetheless he would have been a contender all the same. Now he will face Scotland’s Kieran Merrilees who knocked out England’s Harry Wright 21-12, 22-20. While on paper Merrilees is the favourite, I’m sure he won’t be taking Ulsing lightly.
