German Open 2009: Boy Do The Boys Have Depth

On February 25, 2009, in Minor BWF Tournaments, by Emmet Gibney

Day one is done in Mulheim, and while there were few big upsets, there were some really tight matches, and it just shows how much depth the men’s singles has. I don’t really follow the other events (if anyone else would like to help me out and write about the other events PLEASE contact me!), so I can’t really comment on them, but I’m loving the men’s singles these days.

First off I’ll start by commenting on my buddy and fellow Canadian David Snider. David came sooo close to beating England’s Andrew Smith. Andrew won the match 23-25, 21-19, 21-16, and that is great for a kid who is still only 20 (I think David is 20, correct me if I’m wrong).

I probably should have commented on this first, but that doesn’t reduce the hugeness of this upset for Rajiv Ouseph who knocked out Dutch player Dicky Palyama who was the 8th seed. Ouseph won 21-14, 21-18. This kid is a strong player, he brought Gade to three games at the last French Open Super Series.

Should be some very exciting second round matches, so keep following the results! Here are the draws:
