Lin Dan’s first tournament since the Sudirman is over at the Quarter Final stage after losing to Chen Jin at the Quarter Final stage today. The duo shared the opening two games before a Lin Dan collapse allowed Chen Jin to take the third set easily 21-4.
On the TV Court, Blair and Bankier’s excellent tournament ended at the hands of Olympic Champions Lee and Lee of Korea. The 2nd seeds won in two games against the British duo in exactly 30 minutes, conceding just 30 points. (21-12, 21-18)
Zheng Bo and Ma Jin continued their excellent run in the last two tournaments with an excellent win over top seeded Indonesian pair of Widianto and Natsir to set up a Semi-Final clash with the Danish 4th seeds Laybourn and Rytter Juhl.
Japan’s Sayaka Soto had played four matches to reach the last eight stage, but the eighth seed proved too big a hurdle as Xie Xingfang disposed of the qualifier in two games. Wang Yihan suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Lu Lan at the quarterfinal stage, with the 7th seed Lu Lan winning the 3rd game 22-20 to set up a Semi-Final match against India’s Saina Nehwal.
Meanwhile, the match of the day pitted local hero Taufik Hidayat against 2nd seeded Peter Gade. A tight opening set was won by Taufik 21-19, but the Dane fought back to take the second game 21-8, winning 7 straight points to take the game. The third set was tight was but the Indonesian always had the lead but didn’t take his opportunity at the first or second attempt as Gade fought back to 20-20 in the final game. Taufik took the next two points and won the match at the third time of asking to setup an all Indonesian Semi Final against Sony Kwi Kuncoro.

The seeded players came out on top for the majority of the day on all five disciplines with only third seeded players out today. Imogen Bankier and Robert Blair took the first seeded scalp in the opening hours of the third day; they beat the 8th seeded couple of Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkum in 3 games to progress to the Quarter Finals on Friday.
Chan Yan Kit disposed of the 7th seed in the Men’s Singles in Joachim Persson in two games. Persson is the only seed to fall in the Mens Singles to date. Wins for Taufik Hidayat over last weeks runner-up Boonsak Ponsana and for Sony Dwi Kuncoro ensured some home players would be playing in the Quarter Finals.
In the Women’s Singles, third seeded Wang Lin safely progressed to the Quarters after her Indonesian opponent Adriyanti Fridasari retired at the end of the first match that the Chinese seed won 21-13. 8th seeded Xie Xingfang defeated Rachel Van Cutsen in two games to set up a potential Semi-Final clash with Wang Lin.
In the other half of the draw, 2nd seed Wang Yihan has spent less than a hour on court to progress to the Quarter Final where she will play fellow Chinese player and 7th seed Lu Lan. The battle of the Chinese compatriots in round was between Lu Lan and Zhu Lin was won by the 7th seeded in two matches. 4th Seed Wang Chen lost out to unseeded Korean Hye Youn Hwang in three games to take the seeds left in the ladies draw down to just 5.
Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark’s excellent run of form ended with a second round defeat to Indonesian pair Luluk Hidiyanto and Joko Riyadi in two games (24-22, 21-16). Only Zheng Bo and Ma Jin as well as Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen remain from last weeks winners.

The Ladies Singles draw has been blown wide open with last weeks winner and top seed Zhou Mi losing in the opening round to qualifier Sayaka Sato of Japan in three games early this morning.
Fifth seed Pi Hongyan suffered a similar fate, losing to Indonesian Maria Fabe Kusumastuti in three sets, meaning only two seeds remained in the top half of the draw in Wang Lin (Seeded 3rd) and Xie Xingfang (Seeded 8th)
There was no trouble for any of the other six seeded ladies with all of them progressing to Thursday’s second round encounters.
In the Mens draw, Lin Dan’s return to action was against Indonesia’s Andre Kurniawan Tedjono. The 3rd seed progressing comfortably in two sets to set up a second round clash with Hsieh Yu Hsing.
All three Indonesian seeds progressed to round two, as well as Peter Gade who set up a second round match with the man who put out Lee Chong Wei in Singapore, Tien Minh Nguyen. Last weeks runner-up Boonsak Ponsana will play Taufik Hidayat in Round 2.
