Huge upsets in the second round of the Aviva Singapore Super Series 2009, both the first and second seeds have been upset. Lee Chong Wei lost to Vietnam’s Tien Minh Nguyen 24-22, 20-22, 21-19 (soooo close) and Peter Gade lost to India’s Anup Sridhar 21-19, 16-21, 21-13. Two huge wins for two unseeded players, in fact, Anup came through qualifying (don’t feel so bad Stephan). Although it is quite likely that they will both lose their next matches, particularly Tien, Anup has a much better chance, but it would be another great win for him to beat Boonsak Ponsana.
The only other surprise was Boonsak’s win over Simon Santoso. The result was not quite so surprising, however the scoreline of 21-11, 21-7 was. Also, Rajiv Ouseph had a good match against Chen Jin, losing 21-19, 21-16, but unless you win, it doesn’t count towards much. Stay tuned for more results soon.
Here is the men’s singles draw for the Aviva Singapore Super Series 2009:
The top two seeds are Lee Chong Wei and Peter Gade. Gade has a big challenge first round against Dicky Palyama, as Palyama beat Gade at the All England’s in 2008. Chong Wei plays Englands top star Andrew Smith. I’m just waiting for Smith to have his first big upset, but I’m not sure that this is the place. Any bets people???
