There was an expectancy of a Lin Dan – Lee Chong Wei final in the men’s singles before the start of play today and they did not disappoint as they set up a rematch of the Korean Open in tomorrow’s All England final.
Lin Dan defeated Germany’s Marc Zwiebler in a unexpected three game match, with Zwiebler’s excellent play taking the match into a deciding game. However, the 3rd seed and Olympic champion wasn’t too good in the third game and re-asserted his dominance to take the match 21-9, 16-21, 21-11 in 63 minutes. Lee Chong Wei reached the final in his two game victory over China’s Chen Long to continue his fantastic week in Birmingham.
Wang Shixian is through to her first All England final with a win over Wang Xin in the first of the women’s singles semi finals, taking the match in two tight games 21-19, 21-17. Eriko Hirose breaks up the Chinese dominance in this event with a win in her semi final over Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva in another tight two game match, winning 21-15, 22-20 to book her place in tomorrow’s final.
Another top seed through to tomorrow’s final is the Danish pair of Boe and Mogensen who defeated the young Chinese pair of Chai and Guo in two games, after a tight opening game which the Danes took 26-24 before comfortably winning the second game 21-12 to book their place in the final. Their opponents in the final will be the 5th seeded Koo and Tan who defeated Cai and Fu in their semi final in one of the quickest matches of the day at just 39 minutes with the Malaysian’s winning 21-11, 23-21 to book their place in the final.
Wang and Yu’s fantastic run in recent months continued with another finals appearance after defeating the Danish pair of Damkjaer Kruse and Roepke in a three game match with one side of the court clearly giving the pair on hitting with the drift an advantage. Wang and Yu took the opening game 21-10 before losing the second game 16-21 and then regained their advantage with the drift to take an early lead and held on to win 21-9 in the final game. Their opponents in the finals are Fujii and Kakiiwa of Japan who defeated their team mates Naito and Matsuo in a tight two game, 50 minute match with Fujii and Kakiiwa winning 21-19, 21-17.
Ma and Xu won the match of the unseeded pairs in the mixed doubles against Fuchs and Michels in a 40 minute, two game match which the Chinese pair won 21-19, 21-17. They take on the 3rd seeded Thai pairing of Prapakamol and Thoungthongkam who defeated the pairing of Russkikh and Setiawan in their own two game victory which they won 21-17, 21-15 to stop Russkikh’s run at the semi finals for the second time in five years.
