The top seed in the women’s singles, Pi Hongyan, was defeated today by China’s Zhu Lin. Not a huge surprise however as the Chinese shuttler has a world title under her belt. Local hopeful Anna Rice had another strong performance, this time defeating Japan’s Uchida Shizuka 20-22, 22-20, 21-11 to set up a quarter-final battle against 3rd seeded Korean Kim Moon Hi.
Taufik Hidayat struggled again today with yet another three game performance. France’s Mathieu Lo Ying Ping pushed the Indonesian far but he couldn’t take the match falling 13-21, 21-19, 21-16. Tomorrow Hidayat will play Denmark’s Christian Lind Thomsen who came through against England’s Carl Baxter in spite of being reprimanded for his overzealous celebrations. Thomsen won in three 11-21, 21-16, 21-15. There was also some controversy in the men’s round of sixteen when Brice Leverdez benefited from an error on the part of the referee. Leverdez had touched the game winning shot from his opponent Derek Ziliang Wong, however the referee did not hear the shuttle being contacted and called the shot out bringing the score level at 20 all instead of awarding the second game to Wong. Wong’s protest went unheard and shortly after Leverdez took the second game and the match 21-16, 22-20 to the disgust of the crowd. Tomorrow Leverdez will face his teammate Simon Manoury who is having the performance of his career after defeating 3rd seed Rajiv Ouseph earlier in the day.
