This Lin Dan was a diffent guy ro the one who played in the All-England: this Lin Dan looked focused and committed to the task in hand. The Lin Dan in Birmingham seemed distracted and dis-interested in badminton, and was getting annoyed with himself for making so many silly mistakes.
Against Taufik he was totally in control of the game, and more importantly, himself.
The only person who can beat Lin Dan, is Lin Dan.
I think you hit the nail on the head. He has won the AE Championships 4 times already, it’s not that big a deal for him. With the Thomas Cup he has to protect his national pride so he had better bring his top form, and that’s what he did.
I agree, Lin Dan had a lot to prove after his recent losses!
BTW: When will Taufik realise that he has to play with full commitment right from the beginning if he wants to compete against an opponent like Lin Dan?!
I think Lin Dan has got to the stage where he realises that he can beat anyone if he brings his ‘A’ game, and he is struggling with motivation.
He is very patriotic, and that was enough to make him play the way he can in the Thomas cup. Will be interesting to see if he manages to take that form into the next 5 or 6 individual tournaments.
You have to feel sorry for the likes of Taufik and the rest: they are almost hoping for Lin Dan to have an off day and just playing to their own game plan.
I think this was the problem with Taufik, Simon: it needs a change in mind-set for him to realise that his ‘normal’ game isn’t enough to trouble an in-form Lin Dan. He needs to do a major re-think – has he got the stamina left to play with full committment through the match? Is he mentally and physically capable of sustaining it? As you point out, flashes of brilliance are not enough to beat Lin Dan.
He (and the rest) need to take a quantum leap if they are really going to compete with Lin Dan. They HAVE to come up with something else.
I seem to remember hearing that Han Jian trained in a diving bell prior to beating Morten Frost in the All-England: he realised he needed to do something ‘special’ to beat the then ‘invincible’ Morten Frost. It needs the rest to radically re-think their game plan and come up with something exceptional to shake up Lin Dan’s self-belief.
Co-sign!
Unfortunately Taufik doesn’t seem to be capable of making that change anymore.
BTW: …just ordered a diving bell…
I agree with you: I think Taufik is too old to change his game to that extent.
I think it is going to be a while, but then some of the young pretenders will push the bar higher and make Lin Dan struggle.
Simon: don’t forget the ice bath, training on top of Mount Everest, in Death Valley etc, if you are really serious about beating Lin Dan.
Oh, by the way…I will be the little skinny guy training next to you!!!
