Jan O Jorgensen Defeats Taufik Hidayat

Men’s Singles

Lee Chong Wei has safely progressed into Round 2 with a routine 21-14, 21-4 win over Rajiv Ouseph of England, however 3rd seeded Taufik Hidayat is out in Round 1 after losing out to in-form Jan O Jorgensen in three games. The Indonesian took the opening game comfortably 21-7, before losing the next two games, 21-17 and 21-19. Jorgensen posted the following on his Facebook Fan page:

Very good news tonight. Won in rubber set against Taufik Hidayat (INA) former world and olympic champion 7-21 21-19 21-17. First set was so tough and i didnt know what to do at all. – I fought my way back and stealed the second set. Im very satisfied with third set where i raised my game to a very high level. Next up i…s Kazushi Yamada (JPN) – I had beaten him twice last year. So hopefully i can progress tomorrow..

Peter Gade is also safely through to Thursday and into round 2, with a 21-12, 21-17 win over Hu Yun. There also wins for Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai also to maintain 4 of the eight seeds left in the competition. As well as the seeded players, there were some other excellent first round matches, Boonsak Ponsana defeated Chen Long in three games in a match that would have been a potential quarter final match last week in Korea, as both players were seeded for that event.

Andrew Smith won the all-English tie of the first round, beating Carl Baxter 21-16, 21-16 to book his place in round 2. Du Pengyu defeated last week’s 5th seed Park Sung Hwan in round 1 in two games, 21-16, 21-17, he plays Lee Chong Wei in Round 2. Tien Minh Nugyen’s 3 game win over Marc Zweibler sets up a round 2 encounter with Bao Chunlai.

Women’s Singles

Last weeks beaten finalist in Korea, Sung Ji Hyun was all set to qualify before being promoted to the main draw, where she defeated Linda Zechiri in two games to progress to round 2. However, 4th seeded Zhou Mi defeat to Bae Youn Joo is less then a shock than first expected as the 4th seed has struggled for form for a number of months now as her seeding has plummeted from the top spot in the recent months. The same cannot be said for the Chinese crop of players, with Wang Yihan, Wang Lin, Jiang Yanjiao, Wang Xin and last weeks winner Wang Shixian all progressing safely into round 2.

Other seeds like Juliane Schenk, Saina Nehwal and Tine Rasmussen are all into round 2 also with routine two game wins. Tomorrow sees top seeded Wang Yihan take on Korean Super Series winner Wang Shixian whilst Wang Xin takes on Tine Rasmussen in two of the top matches on court tomorrow.

Other Matches

Lee Yong Dae suffers another shock Round 1 defeat, this time in the men’s doubles as him and partner Jung Jae Sung fall to unseeded Hoon and Ong of Malaysia in round 1, losing the second game 21-4 in the process. Koo and Tan are safely into round 2, as well as Clark and Robertson, Chandra and Gunawan and Howard Bach and Tony Gunawan.

Ma and Wang were in dominant form in their opening round match in the women’s doubles, defeating Ng and Abdul of Malaysia 21-10, 21-4. Second seeded Du and Yu are also through, beating Matsuo and Niato of Japan 21-11, 21-11. 7th seeded and last weeks beaten finalists Fujii and Kakiiwa looked on course to lose their opening game in their match against Santoso and Marissa before the Indonesian couple retired 19-16 up in the first game.

Lee and Sung survived a second game blip to win their opening round match 21-18, 18-21, 21-13. They play the couple that put them out in the opening round last week Tao and Zhang of China. World Champions Rytter Juhl and Laybourn are into round 2 after bouncing back from a game down to win the match 20-22, 21-17, 21-17. Anthony Clark and Heather Olver’s first competitive match was a successful one, beating 7th seeded Mateusiak and Kostiuczyk 23-21, 12-21, 21-16 to set up an all-English match in round 2 against Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork.
