The best eight players in the world converge on Malaysia for the chance to the Super Series Finals champion for 2009, all except the Chinese contingent who have pulled out the majority of their squad. Only Bao Chunlai, Guo Zhendong and Xu Chen will represent China at this year’s event.
Group A of the Men’s Singles has the favourite Lee Chong Wei, Bao Chunlai, Taufik Hidayat and Hsieh Yu Hsin in it, whilst Group B has Peter Gade, Park Sung Hwan, Jan Jorgensen and Boonsak Ponsana in it.
Wednesday’s opening matches sees Gade take on Jorgensen, Ponsana against Park, Lee Chong Wei against Hsieh Yu Hsin and Bao Chunlai against Taufik Hidayat.
Saina Newhal is the favourite for the ladies title, with no Wang Yihan, Lu Lan, Mi Zhou or Tine Rasmussen taking part in the event. The Men’s Doubles is without world champions Cai and Fu but a strong field will provide an excellent competition. Koo and Tan are the favourites from Group A, with Lee and Jung the favourites from Group B.
